Dell Inc. has announced it has acquired Wyse Technology.
Whilst this may not be an unexpected move since Dell have a gap in this market which HP filled ages ago with its T series of thin devices, how will this affect Wyse?
Now, cards on the table, we are a partner of Wyse and a fan of the product, it is a great strategic fit for our Virtuoso platform, but in our expereince, they do suffer a little when it comes to customer service/support. The product is good, we've had a few go pop, but then many bits of IT kit do that as we all well know, however the key bit is how it is dealt with when it goes pop, this is a measure of a good vendor.
In our commercial experience Dell does not fair well either, and this is the authors' opinion based on many years of experience in the IT industry.
So how will the two parties benefit?
I'm hoping that Wyse will stay as they are, with a few little touches to neaten their customer service and support offering, but I fear they will be swallowed up into the behmoth that is Dell and become a Dell badged product. This would be a shame as Wyse are really starting to become recognised in their own right with the re-birth of cloud technology, and the environmental benefits of the Wyse products versus their PC counterparts, in the same way Salesforce use the slogan "no software", Wyse carry the "no PC" moniker, and we believe this is a very likely direction for commercial IT systems in general.
